The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted by 196 Parties at COP 21 in Paris. The Russian Federation has joined the Paris Agreement.
The European Green Deal provides a roadmap with actions to boost the efficient use of resources by moving to a clean, circular economy and stop climate change, reverse biodiversity loss and cut pollution.
Climate change and environment cooperation between EU and Russia
Climate change and the environment are areas of tremendous significance both to the EU and Russia. Over the past two decades, the EU has provided support for numerous projects aimed at improving environmental standards in Russia.
On 25 January 2021, the Foreign Affairs Council exchanged views on climate and energy diplomacy and adopted conclusions on “Climate and Energy Diplomacy – Delivering on the external dimension of the European Green Deal”.
European Green Deal: Commission aims for zero pollution in air, water and soil
On 12 May 2021, the European Commission adopted the EU Action Plan: “Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil”. It sets out an integrated vision for 2050: a world where pollution is reduced to levels that are no longer harmful to human health and natural ecosystems, as well as the steps to get there.
On 15 December 2021, the European Commission proposed to further adjust EU’s energy and climate policy framework to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and remove carbon from the atmosphere. These proposals follow up on the package of proposals adopted in July and are essential to reach climate neutrality by 2050 and our 2030 climate targets.

People for Nature is a WWF-Russia project that will attract public organisations and local communities to take an active part in environmental protection. The project is being implemented with the support of the European Union.

The European Forest Institute in cooperation with the Scientific Council on Forest of the Russian Academy of Sciences will organize a series of events in 2021 under the general theme “Russian forests and climate change”, based on the discussion of the new EFI publication of the same name.
