Global Gateway is the European strategy to boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world. Through a 'Team Europe approach', Global Gateway brings together the EU, its Member States and their financial and development institutions to mobilise the private sector to leverage investments promoting sustainable growth.
Between 2021 and 2027, Team Europe is mobilising up to €300 billion of investments for sustainable, transformational and high-quality projects around the globe, taking into account the needs of partner countries and ensuring lasting benefits for local communities. This allows EU’s partners to create resilient and sustainable societies and economies, but also create opportunities for the EU Member States’ private sector to invest and remain competitive, whilst ensuring the highest environmental and labour standards, as well as sound financial management.

Global Gateway in North Macedonia
In the framework of Global Gateway, the EU has identified investments in sustainable transport, clean energy, environment and climate, digital future, human capital and the private sector. These investments aim to support a green and digital transition and bring the region closer to the EU’s single market.
For projects in North Macedonia, since 2020 the EU has already mobilised €1.8 billion in investments thanks to €638 million in EU grants. Funds are raised through tools such as the Western Balkans Investment Facility Framework (WBIF).
This includes:
• Completion of the rehabilitation of a 34 km railway line between Beljakovce and Kriva Palanka on Rail Corridor VIII, providing direct access to modern means of transport to more than 350 000 people.
• Increasing capacity of Bogdanci wind park by up to 15 MW, which should allow the facility to supply 22 000 households with clean energy and avoid 153 600 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
• Constructing a wastewater treatment plant for Skopje, expected to serve 528 900 people and mitigate pollution of the Vardar River.
