Prior to his appointment as EU Ambassador to Nicaragua, Fernando Ponz Cantó served as Special Adviser for the Americas at the EEAS, where he led the preparations for the new EU-Latin America and the Caribbean agenda, adopted on the eve of the recent EU-CELAC Summit.

Among his most recent posts, he served as Head of the EU Delegation to Guyana (also responsible for Suriname, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St Barthélemy, St Eustatius and Sint Maarten). As Deputy Head of Division in the EEAS he was in charge of EU relations with Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and West Africa.

Ambassador Ponz Cantó holds a PhD in Peace and Security from the Instituto Universitario Gutiérrez Mellado of the Universidad Nacional de España a Distancia, where he also studied for a degree in Political Science.

The EU representative in Nicaragua is of Spanish origin. He was a grantee of the German Marshall Fund and Fulbright programmes, and a laureate of five open competitions of the European Union and the Spanish Administration. He has also held various diplomatic posts in London, Sofia and other destinations.

A warm welcome to the Delegation of the European Union in Nicaragua. On this page you will find information about our activities in the country and in the world.

We have a long history of solidarity and cooperation between Europeans and Nicaraguans. I am deeply grateful for the fantastic welcome I have received in this beautiful country. I will do my utmost to develop EU-Nicaragua relations in the spirit of dialogue, respect and mutual benefit in the interest of our citizens.
