EU-Kuwait Energy Seminar Drives A Greener Energy Future

The EU and Kuwait are leveraging a longstanding partnership to accelerate Kuwait’s green transition. Experts have outlined a shared vision for clean energy.

As the EU and Kuwait commemorate throughout this year the Anniversary of 40 years of diplomatic relations, the EU Delegation in Kuwait has organised a high-level roundtable seminar highlighting the role played by EU experts in advancing Kuwait’s energy sector.  The event held at the EU Residence also elaborated on how to strengthen EU-Kuwait cooperation in this vital sector. European experts joined as speakers along with representatives from the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research ‘KISR’ Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science ‘KFAS’ and the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation KPC. The seminar focused on the structural shifts within Kuwait’s energy sector as the country pursues its ambitious "Vision 2035" and commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Attendees included diplomats, energy executives from the public and private sector as well as technical experts.

In her opening speech the EU Ambassador to Kuwait Anne Koistinen emphasised that "European experts have worked hand-in-hand with their Kuwaiti counterparts for decades, embedded across oil and gas operations, renewable energy projects, engineering consultancies, technical standardization bodies, and policy advisory roles. She also said that this roundtable builds on the success of the EU-Kuwait Green Transition Forum held in Kuwait last February under the auspices of HE the Kuwaiti Minister of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy Dr. Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeem, which brought together senior government officials, research institutions, and the private sector to advance cooperation on clean energy, climate resilience, and skills development’. She concluded her speech by saying that ‘We look forward to launching negotiations on the EU-Kuwait Strategic Partnership Agreement soon. This agreement will provide a formal and institutional framework for our existing collaboration, with a strong focus on the energy sector."

Engineer Dina Al-Nakib, Senior Director of Research & Technology Deployment in KFAS , who moderated the discussions, said "This roundtable succeeded in bringing together prominent European and Kuwaiti energy leaders to highlight the valuable contributions of EU professionals in Kuwait’s energy sector and to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration in support of Kuwait’s energy transition. Participants emphasized the importance of operational excellence, infrastructure readiness, technology deployment, regulatory and investment frameworks, capacity building, and institutionalized knowledge transfer, as well as stronger partnerships among government, industry, research institutions, and diplomatic actors. The roundtable underscored the shared commitment of the EU and Kuwait to building a more diversified, sustainable, and future-ready energy system through innovation, expertise exchange, and long-term strategic cooperation."

The timing of this seminar is particularly significant given the EU’s own rapid energy transformation. Speakers at the seminar noted that the EU has fundamentally restructured its energy system over the past decade, achieving a landmark milestone where renewable energy generated more electricity across the bloc than fossil fuels. This practical, real-world experience in scaling up green energy systems is directly applicable to Kuwait's clean energy ambitions. The EU will continue working with Kuwait on green transition, as the EU and Kuwait stand united in powering green transition in Kuwait and beyond.
