PROTECT – Improving Migration Management and Migrant Protection in selected Silk Routes and Central Asian Countries

The main objective: To contribute to migrant protection in the target countries covering all phases of (in and
out) migration, including countering and preventing irregular migration, trafficking in human beings and
smuggling of migrants.

The specific objectives:
SO1: Enhance a gender-sensitive and rights-based comprehensive migration governance in Pakistan,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
SO2: Support informed decision-making and resilience of migrants at the personal, family and community
level in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan covering the full migration cycle and
in respect of gender and human rights considerations.
SO3: Increase the effectiveness of responses to trafficking in persons (TIP) and smuggling of migrants (SOM)
in target countries, with a particular focus on criminal justice elements, in line with international law and
with full respect for human rights.

Expected results:

  • Improvement of migration governance by supporting the efforts of the respective governments in developing policies, drafting legislation, strengthening institutional capacities, and facilitating multistakeholder processes and partnerships at national and regional levels.
  • Support to existing Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs) in in Afghanistan (virtual), Pakistan, and Tajikistan, and setting-up and operationalisation of new MRCs in Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
  • Enhancement of rights-based and gender equal operational capacity of partner countries to break the TIP and SOM business models through training, mentorship and coaching of dedicated units and officials.
