Global Gateway
Global Gateway is the European strategy to boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world. Through a 'Team Europe approach', Global Gateway brings together the EU, its Member States and their financial and development institutions to mobilise the private sector to leverage investments promoting sustainable growth.
Between 2021 and 2027, Team Europe is mobilising up to €300 billion of investments for sustainable, transformational and high-quality projects, taking into account the needs of partner countries and ensuring lasting benefits for local communities. This allows EU’s partners to create resilient and sustainable societies and economies, but also create opportunities for the EU Member States’ private sector to invest and remain competitive, whilst ensuring the highest environmental and labour standards, as well as sound financial management.

Moving towards an open and connected economy
Ethiopia is devoted to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and reaching middle-income status by 2030 through a climate-resilient, low-carbon development path. To fulfill this vision, a series of reforms are underway to make the economy more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.
Central to this is the Home-Grown Economic Reform Programme 2.0, which aims to ensure macroeconomic stability, improve the business climate, boost competitiveness, and enhance public sector efficiency and transparency.
Ethiopia also aims to transition from a public sector-driven economy to a private sector-led one, reducing debt burdens, raising infrastructure standards, and creating jobs and business opportunities.
To reach these goals, Ethiopia seeks reliable partners to channel international finance and private investment into sustainable infrastructure projects. These efforts are essential for job creation, skill development, and inclusive growth, ultimately transforming citizens' lives.

RISED Ethiopia is a Global Gateway flagship that supports the twin green and digital transition in Ethiopia by making the power grid stronger, smarter and greener. In partnership with Ethiopian Electric Power, Team Europe will mobilise EUR 270 million of investments to rehabilitate, modernise, and digitalise the electricity transmission network, restore the Ashegoda 120MW wind farm, extend digital connectivity and strengthen the capacities of Ethiopian energy professionals.

Clean Energy Transition for All
Ethiopia is rich in renewable energy resources. By harvesting these resources, Ethiopia can grow in a way that improves the quality of life for all its citizens, addresses climate change and protects the environment. With wind power, Ethiopia can enhance the resilience of its electricity grid—currently heavily dependent on hydropower—against the impacts of climate change.
The Assela 100MW wind farm financed by Denmark and developed by European company Siemens Energy is a perfect example of Global Gateway in action: leveraging finance and expertise from Team Europe partners to build smart, clean and secure energy connections worldwide. With Assela, Ethiopia moves one step closer to becoming a regional hub for renewable energy.
