A Local Agent, Trade and Economic Officer, in the Trade Section

We are

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organizations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to Chile works in close coordination with the Embassies and Consulates of the 27 EU Member States. We are a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and represent the European Union in dealings with the Chilean government in areas that are part of the EU’s remit.

We offer

The post of Trade and Economic Officer (Local Agent Group 1) in the Delegation’s Trade Section. The team consists of three people and there are occasional atypical working hours.
Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation, and on the changes of these needs. The successful candidate will serve under the supervision and responsibility of the Head of Trade, providing support, expertise and assistance in Trade and Economics fields.

Following main tasks and duties are currently required: 

  • Preparation of trade briefings / trade analysis / sectorial notes (notably on public procurement, Trade and Sustainable Development, agriculture, sanitary and phyto-sanitary matters, TBT and other areas like energy and raw materials).
  • Preparation, assessment and forecasts on the regulatory environment including analysis of trade and investment flows.
  • Regular liaising with Chilean Ministries and authorities by monitoring of trade / economic / regulatory policy changes.
  • Liaising with Chambers of Commerce, private sector organizations, academics, civil society organizations and companies.
  • Monitoring of technical issues related to market access.
  • Planning and organisation of Commercial Counsellors meetings (including trade reporting for Heads of Missions and other Trade meetings)
  • Maintaining relationships with the Economic and Trade Counsellors in the Member State Embassies.
  • Overseeing and monitoring the implementation of the modernised EU-Chile Association Agreement.
  • Organisation of EU-Chile trade related Committees, sub-committees, and trade events.
  • Contribute to the preparation of trade and investment related communication material, including press notes, press briefings, inputs for social media, etc. This activity might include contacts with press, academic, business circles on all trade / economic matters.
  • Participate occasionally in missions in and outside of Chile.

The base salary will depend on relevant and verified employment experience, typically starting from 3.553.389 CLP.  There is a competitive benefits package, subject to certain conditions, including personal leave days and public holidays, health insurances and a retirement savings plan.

The expected start date will be 01/02/2024.

Minimum requirements / eligibility criteria (necessary for the application to be considered)

  • University Degree in Economics, International Affairs or similar fields is required
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience
  • Microsoft Office, and common IT tools knowledge
  • Spanish - ability to understand C1, ability to read C1, ability to speak C1, ability to write C1
  • English – ability to understand C1, ability to read C1, ability to speak C1, ability to write C1
  • Right to residence and work in Chile
  • Medical fitness to carry out the tasks assigned

Assets and selection criteria (basis for awarding points to select the best applicant)

  • Excellent communication skills, with emphasis on clear and succinct written reporting.
  • In depth knowledge of the European Union and its policies
  • English and Spanish C2 Level or higher according to CEFR
  • Knowledge of additional European languages
  • Further studies such as a Master’s degree in Economics, International Affairs or related fields

The process

After the deadline for applications, the eligible applications will be admitted to the Selection by the Committee set up for this purpose.

Depending on the number of applications received, successive phases of Selection may include shortlisting of candidates based assessment of the information provided in the cover letter, CV; practical testing and interviews. A shortlist of the best candidates will be invited to the final phase, which will include a written test and panel interview. Employment and education certificates may be required from those admitted to the final stage.

Only candidates admitted to each successive selection phase will be contacted individually. The Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this job advertisement to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
