Connecting Cameroon to the energy of tomorrow

Cameroon and the European Union are working together to accelerate the transition to green energy. Through Global Gateway and the international pledging campaign ‘Scaling up Renewables in Africa’ , the European Union is leading efforts to rapidly expand renewable energy across the continent, aiming to triple clean energy capacity by 2030. In Cameroon this means investing in hydroelectric dams, electrification and transmission lines to provide clean, reliable and affordable electricity. These efforts create a positive impact on people’s lives, today and tomorrow.

Meet Valery

I’m Valery, and cooking is my passion. From assisting my grandmother in the village to running my own restaurant in Douala, food has always been a part of who I am. In my restaurant, I love blending my love for nature, culture, and great food into one.

With long days of market runs, food preparation, and late-night service, reliable energy is crucial to keep the kitchen running smoothly.

Sustainable energy means more than just power for the lights, it ensures that the natural environment I’ve worked hard to create can thrive. It supports my vision, keeps the restaurant's heart beating, and allows me to serve my community while respecting the planet.

Meet Larissa

I’m Larissa, and football is my passion. From playing in the streets as a child to competing in elite clubs, I’ve fought for my place in the game. Balancing my career as a sports teacher, a football coach, and a mother isn’t easy, but every training session keeps my dream alive.

With long days and late-night practice, reliable energy is essential to keep the training ground lighted so I can play after hours.

Sustainable energy means more opportunities for players like me. It keeps the game going, fuels our ambitions, and ensures that no dream is left in the dark. Because when the lights stay on, so does my passion for the game.

Scaling up Renewables in Africa campaign

Part of a bigger mission

Africa has the power to become the most sustainable continent in the world. But despite this potential, millions of people across the continent still lack access to electricity. As Africa’s population and global climate challenges grow, the ‘Scaling up Renewables in Africa’ pledging campaign aims to unlock that potential. This transition via Global Gateway investments will provide affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy to the African people, while creating jobs and driving long-term growth.

Nachtigal hydroelectric dam – a clean energy game-changer

Global Gateway flagship initiative

The Nachtigal dam on Cameroon’s Sanaga River is a game-changer for the region’s energy future. Now fully operational, the dam delivers 420 MW of clean energy—meeting nearly 30% of Cameroon’s electricity demand and is set to export clean power to Chad—boosting regional energy security. It reduces reliance on fossil fuels, cuts emissions, and lowers electricity costs. Backed by European Union funding through the Global Gateway, Nachtigal is a cornerstone of Cameroon’s green transition—expanding energy access, driving economic development, and creating jobs, all while respecting the highest environmental and social standards.

Powering the cotton industry with modernisation and clean energy

Global Gateway flagship initiative

Sodecoton, Cameroon’s leading cotton producer, is modernizing and expanding its industrial facilities to boost seed cotton processing capacity, enhance product quality and diversification, and incorporate renewable energy solutions. Backed by the European Union through the Global Gateway, this project not only drives job creation and economic growth but also strengthens the cotton-textile sector, while advancing Cameroon’s broader green transition objectives.

Bringing Power to Communities

Global Gateway initiative

The Rural Electrification Master Plan (PDER) aims to connect 10,000 towns and villages across Cameroon to reliable electricity by 2035. This project will benefit over 1.6 million people, helping to close the gap between urban and rural areas - focusing especially on underserved regions such as the Extreme-North, North, and Adamaoua. Supported by the European Union, PDER expands the national grid and deploys renewable energy solutions such as mini-hydro and solar plants. The initiative drives sustainable development, improves living conditions, and empowers communities, particularly women.

Chad-Cameroon – interconnecting power for sustainable growth

Global Gateway initiative

The Chad-Cameroon interconnection project (PIRECT) is enhancing regional energy integration by building a 225 kV high-voltage transmission line linking Ngaoundéré in Cameroon to N’Djamena in Chad. This project extends electricity distribution along the corridor, improving access for communities in both countries. Supported by the European Union through the Global Gateway, PIRECT facilitates the export of clean hydropower from Cameroon’s Nachtigal dam to Chad, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable economic development across the region.
