PRESCIBU TUYATUZE: Strengthening Burundian Civil Society against GBV

Project aimed at amplifying the voice and actions of CSOs (Civil Society Organisations) in Burundi in the prevention and response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through the adoption and promotion of policies and social standards promoting gender equality, social inclusion and empowerment of women and girls.

The PRESCIBU TUYATUZE project, funded by the European Union with a budget envelope of 1 million euros, has been implemented since March 1st, 2022, for a period of 3 years. The project is implemented by a consortium of NGOs composed of IRC (International Rescue Committees), which ensures the lead, and the local associations CAFOB (Collectif des Associations et ONG Féminines du Burundi) and AFHV (Association des Femmes Handicapées “Les Vaillantes”).

The project aims to contribute to strengthening the viability of CSOs and their role in the fight against GBV, advocacy and political dialogue as well as the promotion of gender equality, in the Provinces of Gitega, Bujumbura Mairie, Muyinga and their targeted communes.

Funding is granted to 8 CSOs in order to contribute to strengthening the role of Civil Society Organisations as actors in good governance and the socio-economic development of the country.

The project develops actions to achieve impact at three levels:

1. At individual level: raising awareness in target communities on the rights of women, girls and people living with disabilities, on GBV and gender equality; strengthening the resilience of GBV survivors through access to holistic response services and promoting their socio-economic empowerment through IGAs (Income Generating Activities).

2. At social/ community level: strengthening existing dialogue’s community systems and support through alert, prevention and protection mechanisms in order to effectively and holistically implement the fight against GBV; promotion of community mobilisation through key actors of change in order to abandon sociocultural norms and traditions that lead to GBV and to adopt new attitudes respectful of gender equality.

3. At institutional level: strengthening public institutions and CSOs in order to serve as relays of information to populations on GBV, to promote and adopt legislative and institutional reforms and to raise awareness of laws and regulations in this domain. Strengthening the coordination of interventions in the fight against GBV through the establishment of spaces for dialogue and the sharing of knowledge and data, by promoting strategic analysis.

Thus, this project develops cohesion amongst CSOs and allows a grouped response and an approach as comprehensive as possible including: cases’ management, emergency accommodation, medical assistance, legal advice and economic strengthening of survivors without forgetting women living with disabilities.
