Connecting you to the energy of tomorrow
Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the European Union are working together to accelerate the transition to green energy.
We are investing in sustainable energy programmes that create a positive impact on people’s lives today, and tomorrow. By using the power of wind, sun and water, we give power to the people of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
Meet DJ Quest
Hi, I’m DJ Quest, and I perform at venues all over the Caribbean, but one of my favourite spots is a club in Antigua and Barbuda, right next to a street with some truly special lights.
These lights don’t just brighten our nights—they help protect turtles by guiding them safely. By preventing turtles from getting disoriented, they make a real difference. And while the turtles find their way home safely, so do the people leaving the club.
To me, these lights are more than just streetlights—they’re a powerful reminder of how sustainable energy can benefit both us and the planet we call home.
Meet Chey-Anne
I discovered my passion for cricket at the age of 11, back in primary school, and I’ve been working on my game ever since.
Sustainable streetlights have changed everything! Now, I can train under the evening sky, enjoying the cooler air.
But it’s more than just extra hours on the field. These lights give my team and me the freedom to practice harder, play longer, and ride home feeling safe. And for me, the switch to sustainable energy extends far beyond the cricket field—it’s a step toward a brighter, better future.
PARTNERS
Sustainable energy for the Eastern Caribbean – advancing energy security
Global Gateway initiative
The Sustainable energy for the Eastern Caribbean programme supports the transition to renewable energy and energy efficiency in six Eastern Caribbean countries: Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, St Lucia, and Antigua and Barbuda. By financing climate-friendly investments, the programme reduces reliance on costly fossil fuel imports, lowering electricity costs and enhancing energy security. It provides technical assistance, capacity building, and direct funding for renewable energy and efficiency projects, including solar installations and LED streetlight replacements. The EU is a key partner in this effort, ensuring the highest environmental and financial standards while driving sustainable economic growth in the region.
Renewstable Barbados - revolutionising energy with green hydrogen
Global Gateway initiative
The Renewstable Barbados project pioneers green hydrogen storage to ensure a stable, clean electricity supply in Barbados. By integrating solar power with on-site hydrogen storage, it overcomes renewable energy intermittency, enhances grid stability, and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. This initiative is a major step toward Barbados’ goal of carbon neutrality by 2030, lowering emissions and improving energy security. Through partnership with the EU, this project strengthens the Caribbean’s renewable energy transition, showcasing innovative solutions for a more resilient and sustainable future.
Sustainable Energy Management Programme (Smart Fund II) – transforming Barbados’ energy landscape
Global Gateway initiative
The Sustainable Energy Management Programme (Smart Fund II) is catalysing Barbados' shift towards renewable energy and greater energy efficiency. This initiative is designed to reduce the island's dependence on imported fossil fuels, lowering electricity costs and boosting energy security. By supporting clean energy investments in small businesses and public buildings, and expanding electric transportation, the programme contributes to long-term sustainability. Key actions include retrofitting critical infrastructure like hospitals, schools, and government offices with renewable energy solutions, as well as adding electric buses to the public fleet. With EU backing, the programme ensures that the transition is both environmentally and socially responsible, fostering a cleaner, more resilient economy for Barbados.
