Support the adoption and implementation of sustainable agricultural practices by restoring and improving soil fertility in Burundi - TUBUNGABUNGE ISI NDIMWA

Project dedicated to the implementation of agro-ecological practices for sustainable management of soil fertility.

The project contributes to the sustainable improvement of soil fertility and the profitability of farms in the intervention areas.

With a budget of 8.05 million euros, the project is structured around five results, namely:

  1. The capacities of facilitators related to soil fertility, farm management and local organizations management are strengthened.
  2. Farmers have access and implement agronomic solutions to improve soil fertility and the profitability of their production system.
  3. Farmers are able to make the investments necessary to improve soil fertility and labor productivity.
  4. The identified soil fertility restoration and conservation practices were implemented individually and collectively.
  5. Exchanges between stakeholders in the project intervention areas on practices related to soil fertility made it possible to improve the private and public performances of advisory services and support in terms of soil fertility.

The project covers 392 hills spread across 28 communes in 5 provinces (Karusi, Kayanza, Ngozi, Ruyigi and Cankuzo). The main beneficiaries of the project are: nearly 70,000 family farmers, with particular attention to rural women and young people; 7,000 pilot farmers; staff of local organizations; agents of the Provincial Offices of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock “BPEAE”.

The project is implemented by a consortium composed of two Belgian NGOs (Collectif pour des Stratégies Alimentaires – CSA et Broederlijk Delen – BD) and two local organizations (Appui au Développement Intégral et à la Solidarité sur les Collines – ADISCO et la Confédération des Associations des Producteurs Agricoles pour le Développement – CAPAD).
