We Rock for Justice!
What a night! More than 8,000 people joined the We Rock for Justice! concert, featuring some of Myanmar's best singers and musicians including Wai La, Phyu Phyu Kyaw Thein and the legendary Zaw Win Htut and his band Emperor. This was not an ordinary concert though, and not just because of the artists who inspired the crowd to sing along with the lyrics of their classic hits.
The event was the highlight of the Pyaw Kya Mal: Let's Talk! campaign to raise awareness of justice issues in Myanmar and part of the EU-funded MyJustice project. Pyaw Kya Mal is a public conversation on the importance of justice to society – justice that matters for rich and poor, powerful and vulnerable, able and disabled and people from different ethnicities and religions. The campaign emphasises the need to talk, listen and support each other in the quest for justice. This spirit was integral to the We Rock for Justice! concert, as well – where the singers shared with the audience what equality and fairness means to them.
Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe and actor Zenn Kyi joined EU Ambassador Kristian Schmidt on stage to welcome the crowd. Ambassador Schmidt encouraged everybody to "think about how we can all reach out to each other when we see injustice, and how to stand up for your rights. Asking for justice, equality and dignity is not asking for too much. In fact, these are basic human rights. So "Let’s Talk" and let’s stand together for these values! And Let us Rock for Justice!"
