How does non-military service work in Finland?

This is what a group of Russian human right activists will learn on their study visit to Finland from 16th till 21 October. The visit aims to familiarize Russian lawyers and human rights activists with the conditions of the Finish military and alternative civilian service and the work of Finish government structures responsible for related policy development and implementation mechanisms.

The participants will visit the Finnish Center for Non-Military Service where conscientious objector undergo a basic training course; the Finnish Peace Committee and finally the Finnish Union of Conscientious Objectors which will inform them about the history of conscientious objection in Finland and how the Union functions.

The visitis organised in the framework of the EU Delegation's to the Russian Federation project “Public Diplomacy. EU and Russia”together with the human rights initiative “Citizen and Army”.

The project Public Diplomacy. EU and Russia aims to facilitate dialogue between selected Russian and EU audiences in order to pave the way to a better understanding between the EU and Russian societies on a number of bilateral and global issues and for smoother EU-Russia relations.
