The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini met yesterday with the Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz in the margins of the Our Ocean conference in Malta. The High Representative Mogherini and Minister Muñoz discussed the common EU and Chilean engagement and cooperation in protecting the oceans and promoting a sustainable maritime economy as well as in fighting climate change, also through the key role of multilateral fora.
The High Representative and the Chilean Foreign Minister also had an exchange on the excellent bilateral relations between the European Union and Chile, as well as between the European Union and Latin America. They agreed on the need to further strengthen their links through accelerating the modernisation of the Association Agreement, and by deepening the bi-regional dialogue with CELAC.
Minister Muñoz updated the High Representative Mogherini on the ongoing attempt at regional facilitation in Venezuela. They agreed on the importance of confidence building measures, such as the release of political prisoners, to restart an effective dialogue between the government and opposition. They also emphasised the significance of the upcoming regional elections, which should allow all Venezuelans to attend the polls and express their views in full transparency and respect of the electoral law. HRVP Mogherini assured Minister Muñoz of the EU's continued support for the regional facilitation efforts.
