Amb. Marjolijn van Deelen assumed the position of EU Special Envoy for Non-proliferation and Disarmament on 1 September 2020. In that capacity, she represents the EU in matters related to weapons of mass destruction as well as conventional export controls and Small Arms and Light Weapons.

Before joining the EU External Action Service (EEAS), she headed the Non-proliferation, Disarmament and Nuclear Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. Amb. Van Deelen previously served as head of the Europe Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for bilateral relations with over 20 countries. She was Deputy Permanent Representative to the Mission of the Netherlands to the UN Organizations in Vienna from 2009 to 2013 where her focus was on IAEA non-proliferation and peaceful uses as well as the CTBT.

She was posted at the Netherlands Embassy in Bucharest as Head of Economic and Trade Affairs. In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, she held functions in the Middle East department, the UN department and in Environmental issues. She also served in Costa Rica with regional accreditation. She entered the Dutch Foreign Service in 1994.

Ms. Van Deelen holds a Masters in Geophysics from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, as well as a BA in Economics from the American University in Washington DC.

 

EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium

The EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium is a network of independent non-proliferation and disarmament think tanks. 

The latest Council Decision extended EU support for the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium until 2021.
