As we celebrate its 50th anniversary, the European Union reiterates its firm conviction that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is the cornerstone of the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime. This conviction must be maintained and strengthened.
The Treaty has made a positive contribution to international peace, security and stability. All NPT States Parties reaffirm their unequivocal support for this crucial Treaty and its mutually reinforcing three pillars - disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. We will make every effort to avoid further deterioration of the global security architecture that might also affect the NPT.
It is crucial that all States Parties comply with their Treaty obligations and fully implement all commitments under the Treaty. We must look back at its achievements, including important legally binding norms and political principles that strengthen peace and security. We look forward to continuing to enhance the implementation of the Treaty for the next fifty years and beyond.
