On the 18th and 19th July, the Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC), General Claudio Graziano, payed an official visit to Slovakia where he was warmly welcomed by the Slovak Chief of Defence, General Daniel Zmeko.

Analysing the way forward to 2023 representatives from Member States and the EEAS underlined the continuing need for the civilian CSDP Missions, which work to improve human security in the Eastern and Southern neighbourhood. The "Civilian CSDP Fast Forward "seminar organised 19 July by the Finnish EU Presidency and the EU Institute for Strategic Studies in Brussels provided room for critical analysis and frank discussions.

The EU Member States have extended the area of operation of the civilian CSDP Missions in Niger and Mali to include also the counter-terrorism and anti-crime efforts in other G5 Sahel countries.

Upon invitation by the Secretariat of the United Nations (UN), the Chairman of the
European Union Military Committee (CEUMC), General Claudio Graziano, attended
the Third UN Chiefs of Defence Conference, held at the UN Headquarters in New
York (USA), from 10th to 12th July 2019.

The Council has extended the mandate of the EU co-ordinating office for Palestinian police support (EUPOL COPPS) and the mandate of the EU border assistance mission for the Rafah crossing point (EU BAM Rafah), until 30 June 2020. These missions are part of wider EU efforts in support of Palestinian state building in the context of working towards a comprehensive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution.

To prepare for the African Union summit to be held in Niamey from 6 to 9 July, Nigerien security agencies carried out a crisis management exercise. The civilian CSDP Mission EUCAP Niger and the French Embassy led the exercise which simulated countering a complex terrorist attack.
