The post-2015 agenda for development and migration was discussed when EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met with development ministers from all European Union countries on Tuesday 26 May in Brussels.
The European Commission presented a European Agenda on Migration outlining the immediate measures to respond to the crisis in the Mediterranean and steps to be taken in the coming years to better manage migration in all its aspects.
High Representative Federica Mogherini spoke to the UN Security Council in New York about the crisis of migrants in the Mediterranean on Monday 11th May. "We are here to share with you the urgent need to face the tragedies unfolding in the Mediterranean" she said. "We are here to act immediately and to act together. We need an exceptional response. The European Union is finally ready to take its own responsibilities: saving lives, welcoming refugees, addressing the root causes of the phenomenon, dismantling criminal organisations".
We cannot allow other tragedies at sea in the coming weeks and months; we need to be able to give a strong political and operational response. As I have announced today during the College in Strasbourg, I will convene an extraordinary meeting of the Commissioners' Group on External Action in the coming days in order to discuss with the Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, a review of our policies. I've also decided to put a discussion on migration on the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Council soon.
