Today in Brussels, the European Union and Mexico held a High Level Meeting on Multilateral Affairs. This follows the visit of High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini to Mexico on 10-11 September, when it was agreed to step up EU-Mexico cooperation on multilateral issues.

During this first informal meeting, discussions covered sustainable development; the fight against hate speech and expressions of xenophobia and racism; migration and development; the Global Drug Problem; rule of law; peace and security; and gender issues. A range of issues emerged on which the EU and Mexico will work further in the coming months, as like-minded strategic partners. It was agreed to turn the exchange into a regular high-level Dialogue; the next meeting will be held in Mexico in 2020.

Respective delegations were lead by European External Action Service (EEAS) Deputy Secretary General Christian Leffler and Mexico's Vice Minister for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Martha Delgado Peralta.
