On 6 June, in the Meeting Room of the Congress of Governors at the Montevideo City Hall, the project "Strengthening of political decentralisation and equitable territorial development", cofinanced by the Congress of Governors and the European Union, was launched.
The event took place during the 48th Plenary Session of the Congress of Governors, which was chaired by its president, Dr. Adriana Peña, Governor of the Department of Lavalleja. The Head of the EU Delegation to Uruguay, Ambassador Karl-Otto König, Italian Ambassador Gianni Piccato, Portuguese Ambassador Nuno de Mello Bello and British First Secretary Rossa Commane took part of the launch.
Ambassador Karl-Otto König and the Governor Adriana Peña spoke were in charge of the presentation.
In his speech, Ambassador König highlighted the support provided by the European Union to the strengthening of the capacities of local governments in Uruguay to promote development and finance specific projects promoted by municipalities. He emphasised that a cooperation agreement with the Congress of Governors was signed by the EU for the first time. He added that the EU is now working on framework for cooperation for the 2021-2027 period, underlining that support for local governments remains a priority.
After the launch, Ambassador König and the EU Member States Ambassadors held a meeting with the President of the Congress of Governors to learn about the work being carried out by local governments in Uruguay.
