International Human Rights Awards held in Astana

ASTANA– On the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 2018 the International Human Rights Awards ceremony and the solemn reception was held in Astana. The event is organized by the European Union Delegation to Kazakhstan jointly with the Embassies of Canada, Switzerland, the US and the United Nations agencies.

The International Human Rights Awards is annually presented to recognize outstanding civil society organizations, state and media representatives, which have contributed to protecting, promoting and advocating for human rights in Kazakhstan. The nominees were chosen by an International Community Panel in Kazakhstan.

The list of winners in the following nominations:

  • Freedom Defender Award – Aina Shormanbayeva, President of the International Legal Initiative;
  • Improving Legal Policy Award – Yevgeniy Zhovtis, Director of Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and the Rule of Law;
  • Promoting Inclusion Award–Tatiana Chernobil, Amnesty International consultant;
  • Development of Media Award –Vyacheslav Abramov, Vlast.KZ online magazine Chief Editor ;
  • Promoting Justice for All Award – Elvira Azimova , Deputy Minister of Justice of Kazakhstan;
  • Woman of Courage Award  – Zhanar Sekerbayeva, co-founder, Feminita;
  • Civil Society Dialogue Governmental Supporter Award – Aidana Arynbek, Shymkent Social Corporation
  • In Memoriam Award  – Sergey Ivanovich Chuikov, Founder of the NGO “MODI” ,Taraz city;

More than 100 representatives from Kazakh governmental bodies, NGOs, diplomatic corps and international organizations. Among the honorary guests were the high-level US delegation led by Mr. Michael Kelluher, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, U.S. Department of State and Mr. Javier Piedra, Deputy Assistant Administrator, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Background

This year on 10 December we mark the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The promotion and protection of human rights is at the heart of multilateralism, a central pillar of the UN system, and a core and founding value of the EU. The EU believes that peace, sustainable development and prosperity are possible only when they are based on respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law. Human rights are universal and inalienable. We believe that the respect and promotion of human rights will contribute to creating a more prosperous way of life for Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries.
