The meeting availed both sides the opportunity to consider the progress in the implementation of the Partnership Priorities for the period 2017-2020, as well as the development of cooperation in all areas since the last session of the Association Committee in 2016.
Both sides undertook frank discussions on a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including the Middle East Peace Process, Palestine, Syria, Libya, Lebanon, Yemen, Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, partnership with Africa and Egypt’s presidency of the African Union, as both sides took stock of the latest developments on these issues.
Furthermore, they reviewed the results of the subcommittees’ meetings established by the Association Agreement, covering progress of cooperation in the political, human rights, economic, energy, social, judicial, security, anti-terrorism and migration areas. They expressed their satisfaction with Egypt’s confirmation on lifting of customs duties on EU manufactured cars starting 1 January 2019. They highlighted a number of potential areas for further cooperation, in line with their Partnership Priorities and Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy: Egypt’s vision 2030.
Both sides reached an agreement, subject to internal procedures, on the Implementing Arrangement for the participation of Egypt in PRIMA (Program for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area), which is a milestone in EU-Egypt cooperation in research and innovation.
They expressed their satisfaction for the constructive spirit with which the discussions in the Association Committee were conducted, thus paving the way for the upcoming meeting of the Association Council in December 2018, co-chaired by H.E. Sameh Shoukry Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt and H.E. Mrs. Federica Mogherini High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU.
They acknowledged that this constructive approach applied to all areas discussed, including in instances where points of view or opinion diverged.
Both sides expressed their determination to deepen their dialogue and cooperation through a comprehensive and balanced approach in addressing all areas of mutual interest and common challenges, in the interest of both Egypt, the EU and the Middle East at large.
