Busy day on Human Rights at the UN General Assembly today. Spotlight Initiative and Good Human Rights Stories on the agenda...
The day starts with the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative high-level event for the launch of the Latin America Regional Programmes to stop femicide.
The event will feature Heads of State, EU High Representative Mogherini, Commissioner Mimica and the UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed.
Built on the EU-UN strategic partnership, the EU–UN Spotlight Initiative is a joined-up action backed up by with the EU's initial contribution of EUR 500 million aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls in partner countries from five regions: Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Caribbean and Pacific.
The whole Initiative was formally launched on 20 September 2017 during the UNGA72 Ministerial week.
Today the Latin America pillar of the Spotlight Initiative is being presented. The programme of EUR 50 million will fund targeted interventions in Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Ultimate goal: helping eradicate femicide. The Latin America programme will also include a regional component aimed at sharing the successful practices and lessons learnt, while replicating relevant programmes throughout the region.
The day follows with the kick-off on an unprecedented Good Human Rights Stories Initiative.
At a time of aggressive attempts to undermine the universality of human rights through the spreading of negative practices, this initiative aspires to create a fresh positive narrative on human rights in the world. The goal is to create a world coalition of human rights-minded countries to address human rights challenges, domestically and internationally, through good governance, independent rule-of-law and democratic institutions, working closely through open consultations with civil societies.
At today's launch event, 14 members of the initiative, including the EU will present their good stories in form of videos and pictures to showcase that respect for human rights, promotion of good governance and inclusive and democratic societies, together with support to a vibrant civil society, are the best ways to guarantee sustainable security, stability and prosperity in countries.
The event is taking place in the presence of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, High Representative Federica Mogherini and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.
2018 is an important year for human rights, as we mark the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The promotion and protection of human rights is at the heart of multilateralism, a central pillar of the UN system, and of course a core and founding value of the EU.
