Female Genital Mutilation, or FGM, horrifically violates the human rights, dignity and physical integrity of girls and women. In a Joint Statement on the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, EU leaders condemn the ongoing practice of FGM in Europe and around the world, and outline the EU's ongoing actions and commitment to eradicate the practice.
The 5th African Union–European Union (AU-EU) Summit, will take place in Abidjan, Côte D’Ivoire, on 29-30 November 2017 and has "Investing in Youth for a Sustainable Future" as its overarching theme. At this first summit with all AU members, two political partners will meet to cover all aspects of their partnership. Ahead of the summit, 1500 business leaders and decision-makers are gathering on 27 November for the 6th EU-Africa business forum.
Opening the Our Ocean Conference in Malta today, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini announced EUR 560 million of EU funds for 36 concrete actions to protect and ensure the security of the world's oceans. In our globalised world, she said, 90 per cent of world trade is seaborne and millions of jobs and livelihoods depend on the oceans, which are a common good and must be managed through international cooperation. Our oceans are in danger. By 2050 they could contain more plastic than fish.
