Statements by the Spokesperson

The European Union takes note of the invalidation of the results of the 6 October Parliamentary elections by the Election Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic. The EU also notes the concerns raised by Kyrgyz citizens and the international community about possible procedural flaws during the designation of the new Prime Minister. These concerns should be clarified.

The European Union remains committed to cooperating with the legitimate authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic, and highlights the key role of the President in leading the political process for finding the way out of the current crisis through inclusive dialogue across the political spectrum and paving the way for new, free and fair elections in line with international standards and under the OSCE/ODIHR’s observation. We fully support the democratic right of the Kyrgyz people to cast their vote free from any interference or malpractice.

It is crucial that all political forces engage in a dialogue and act within the framework of the Constitution to find a durable solution until new elections can be organised. To this end, the EU encourages close cooperation with the OSCE/ODIHR. In the meantime, the Kyrgyz authorities need to respect the rule of law and basic freedoms, including freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.

The EU fully supports the statement of the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, on the situation in the Kyrgyz Republic and the UN’s efforts in the country.
