On 29 March (15:00-16:00 CET) join us for an online event on the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence - better known as the “Istanbul Convention”.

The Istanbul Convention is widely recognised as the most far-reaching legally binding instrument to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence as a violation of human rights. However, recent events have undermined the Convention, but also women's rights as a whole. In line with the European Commission’s agenda towards Gender Equality, the EU remains committed to implement the Istanbul Convention and a legislative proposal is under preparation. European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli calls the Istanbul Convention “the global gold standard addressing violence against women and domestic violence.”

The webinar will bring together policy-makers and civil society leaders that can speak about the benefits and the challenges that the Istanbul Convention is currently facing. Speakers will discuss the practical implementation and impact of the Istanbul Convention in various countries, while also looking on how it has improved legislation, policy and the public discourse.

The event will be moderated by the EU Ambassador to the Council of Europe, Meglena Kuneva, and will feature the following speakers:

  • Ms Iris Luarasi, First Vice-President, Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO)
  • Ms Ingrid Bellander Todino, Cabinet of European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli
  • Ms Aslihan Tekin, Women’s Coalition Turkey and European Women’s Lobby Board
  • Ms Pia Puu-Oksanen, Amnesty Finland
  • Ms Irena Shtraza, Albanian Women Empowerment Network (AWEN)

The event will take place on 29 March 2021, from 15:00 to 16:00 (CET), and will include short presentations by the speakers, followed by a Questions & Answers session at the end. Please note that the event will be in English, no translation available.

It will take place in an exclusively digital format and will be held on the WEBEX platform. Here is the link to the event:
