The Istanbul Convention is widely recognised as the most far-reaching legally binding instrument to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence as a violation of human rights. However, recent events have undermined the Convention, but also women's rights as a whole. In line with the European Commission’s agenda towards Gender Equality, the EU remains committed to implement the Istanbul Convention and a legislative proposal is under preparation. European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli calls the Istanbul Convention “the global gold standard addressing violence against women and domestic violence.”
The webinar will bring together policy-makers and civil society leaders that can speak about the benefits and the challenges that the Istanbul Convention is currently facing. Speakers will discuss the practical implementation and impact of the Istanbul Convention in various countries, while also looking on how it has improved legislation, policy and the public discourse.
