The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegations play a crucial role in communicating the EUs values, policies and results of its projects towards third country stakeholders.


We offer

We offer a post of Press and Information Officer . Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation. Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as Press and Information Officer –this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function the successful candidate will serve as a technical and support staff to ensure the following tasks under the supervision of the Head of Section and the Head of Delegation:




  • Participate in the definition of the Delegation's annual external communication strategy
  • Monitor and execute the Delegation's external communication activities accordingly
  • Manage and organise all press relations of the Delegation (press releases, interviews, briefings and press conferences, press articles, press trips).
  • Prepare relevant content and visuals for and co-manage the Delegation's website and social media accounts
  • Draft written content including stories, infographics, etc. as needed
  • Organise public diplomacy and visibility events;
  • Work closely with the Delegation's Communication Coordinator for Cooperation activities within the Core Communication Group and provide assistance as needed to Delegation staff with regard to communication activities
  • Coordinate as needed with locally represented Member States and partners on media-related issues and on joint activities.
  • Monitor the information and communication performance (including of social media), the respect of the priorities and fulfilment of the objectives, bringing significant problems to the immediate attention of the Head of Section.
  • Establish and maintain a large information and media network.




  • Ensure daily press review
  • Prepare updates and background documents on political developments for Head of Section and Head of delegation.
  • Follow up on instructions and suggestions from HQ Strategic Communication Division




  • Manage and regularly monitor the annual Press & Information budget and related contracts
  • Prepare the annual report and forward planning


He/ she will be working within an office of 18 expatriates and 28 local staff. Official working hours are 37.5 hours per week. The office location is at Leicester Peak in Freetown.

The Basic salary is group 1 starting at Le 10,208,622 per month. In addition we provide other entitlements which include leave and housing and transport allowances.  Benefits, such as additional pension scheme and medical insurance, are offered to employees and their families under certain conditions.

Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Completed university studies of at least three years attested by a diploma in journalism, communications, international relations, political science or related disciplines;
  2. After having obtained the university diploma, at least two years of professional experience in line with the functions and duties set out in this job profile; candidates should ideally have experience in communications and/or public relations in a politically sensitive environment and have considerable knowledge of the media scene;
  3. Excellent written and oral command of English, solid knowledge of the Krio language; proficiency in the use and management of social media and excellent computer skills (Word, Excel);
  4. Medically fit to perform the required duties;
  5. Enjoys civil rights and permits for employment under local law;
  6. High degree of political awareness and commitment to the core values of the European Union;



Personal skills:

  1. Proactive self-starter with excellent organisational skills, able to work alone and/or in a team;
  2. Respects deadlines, is flexible and stress resistant and is ready to travel up-country;
  3. Discrete and with impeccable ethical standards


The following will be considered an asset:

  1. Previous experience in an international and multicultural working environment;
  2. Knowledge of French and/or other local languages
  3. Additional studies/certified professional training in public relation theories, news writing & editing;
  4. Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field;
  5. Solid knowledge of European decision-making process;

The procedure

After the deadline for applications, the applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a short-list of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the post on the basis of a preliminary assessment of the information provided in their application letter and the supporting documents. The short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment phase which may include a written test and an interview– during this phase; the Selection Committee will assess the suitability of the candidates for the post.

The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually; however, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
