Meeting informally in Sofia, EU foreign ministers discussed the newly proposed Strategy for the Western Balkans for the first time, the ways of strengthening the EU perspective of the region and preparations of the EU – Western Balkans Summit in Sofia. The European Union and the Western Balkans have a common interest in working more strongly together, to guarantee both the citizens of the EU and the region the economic and social development as well as security.

The EU has granted EUR 28 million to Serbia to strengthen the country's capacities to effectively control its borders, reducing organised crime and irregular migration, and an additional EUR 16 million to support refugees – mostly from Syria – and their host communities.

Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament, the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions

All six partner countries of the Western Balkans - Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Serbia - have a clear path to finally join the European Union, EU High Representative Mogherini said today announcing the new Strategy for 'A credible enlargement perspective for and enhanced EU engagement with the Western Balkans' adopted by the European Commission. Sustained efforts and reforms are still needed, but it is clear that integration is in the interest of the people of the EU and Western Balkans.
