FIRST STONE CEREMONY - LAUNCHING THE BUILDING OF CIPA AND FISCAP HEADQUARTERS

09.10.2020

On 02/10 the EU Head of Delegation, Sónia Neto, attended the “first stone” ceremony launching the building of the future HQs of the Bissau-Guinean Fisheries Monitoring Centre (FISCAP) and of the Fisheries Research Centre (CIPA) at the Artisanal Fishing Harbour of Alto Bandim/Bissau.

In addition to the Minister of Fisheries, H.E. Malam Sambú who hosted the event, the ceremony was attended by several members of the Nuno Nabiam government, in particular the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Parliamentary Affairs, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Defence and Freedom of Homeland Fighters and the Minister of Environment and Biodiversity, in an evident sign of the importance  given to the fisheries sector by the Bissau-Guinean public authorities.

In the course of their speeches,  both the PM representative and Minister Sambú emphasised the special and important link which has been established, now, for a long time between the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and the European Union in the fisheries sector, in particular through the Fisheries Agreement (15.6 MEUR/year, including 4 MEUR/year of sectoral support from the EU budget, excluding MS vessel owner fees) and its associated Protocols, but also expressed the wish to go far beyond the current framework, namely in view of favouring EU private investments to support the economic development of the fisheries sector and the associated value-chains in Guinea-Bissau.
