Statements on behalf of the EU

341st session of the ILO Governing Body, 15–27 March 2021 - EU Statement: Progress report on the follow-up to the resolution concerning remaining measures on the subject of Myanmar adopted by the Conference at its 102nd Session (2013), GB.341/INS/17

Thank you, Chairperson.

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.

The Candidate Countries Montenegro*[1] and Albania*, and the EFTA country Norway, member of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this statement.

  1. The European Union and its Member States stand with the people of Myanmar/Burma. As stated clearly in our statement during the GB discussion on Saturday 20th March, we condemn in the strongest terms the military coup carried out in the country on 1 February 2021. The EU and its Member States call for de-escalation of the current crisis through an immediate end to the state of emergency, as well as the martial law in some townships of the Yangon region.
  2. The EU and its Member States will work together with all those willing to support democracy, the rule of law and good governance, and to ensure respect of human rights, including labour rights, and fundamental freedoms in the country.
  3. We support the decision point as amended by the United States, including their subsequent sub‑amendments.

Thank you, Chair.

*Montenegro and Albania continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
