Europe Day 2019: modern ballet masterpieces presented to Kazakhstanis

NUR-SULTAN – On 31 May the Europe Day 2019 was celebrated in Kazakhstan at Astana Ballet theatre with a special festive ballet program - United in Diversity. The event was organized by the EU Delegation to the Republic of Kazakhstan. Europe Day 2019 is taking place under the auspices of the first official visit to Kazakhstan of European Council President Donald Tusk, and the presentation of the new EU Strategy on Central Asia.

The goal of the annual concerts is to present the culture and traditions of Europe, as well as to draw attention to the best examples of European classical music and modern ballet art.

The best ballet masterpieces from theatre repertoire have been performed by the Astana Ballet Theatre company: "A Fuego Lento" by Ricardo Amarante, Love's Lost Idols by Nicolo Fonte, and "The Heritage of the Great Steppe" by Aigul Tati.

EU Ambassador in Kazakhstan Sven-Olov Carlsson addressed the guests with welcoming speech: "The same mind-set also inspires us in cooperation beyond our borders in the strong wish of the European Union to develop close relations with its partners and friends, including the increasing attention to Kazakhstan and the region of Central Asia, as illustrated by today's visit of President Tusk. Kazakhstan is a key partner for the European Union, and our relations have never been stronger ".

Among the guests of the concert were state officials, representatives of diplomatic corps, business community, as well as residents and guests of the capital city Nur-Sultan.

The 2019 Europe day celebration is quite intense and covers meetings with youth, traditional Portuguese fado concert, and piano concert.

Background information

The Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) between the EU and Kazakhstan was signed on 21 December 2015 in Nur-Sultan. Since 1 May 2016 the provisional implementation of the main articles of the Agreement has been launched. The Agreement provides significant boost to economic and political ties between the EU and Kazakhstan and also enhance concrete cooperation in 29 key policy areas, including in the sectors of economic and financial cooperation, energy, transport, environment and climate change, employment and social affairs, culture, education and research.

In the light of the new EU Strategy for Central Asia 100 million euro will be allocated to enhance cooperation with Central Asia in the areas of environment, climate change, rule of law, effective state administration, as well as broad regional security, including Afghanistan.
