Remarks by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini following the Foreign Affairs Council

High Representative Federica Mogherini and Dutch Minister of Defence Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert co-chaired on Friday the informal meeting of Defence Ministers in Amsterdam. The event, organized  by the Netherlands EU presidency, was a fruitful occasion to take stock on the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), with an eye on the ongoing military missions and operations in in the Horn of Africa, the Central African Republic and the Sahel region. The situation in Libya and Afghanistan were also part of the discussion.

Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the Union for foreign affairs and security policy, took part via video conference in a high level seminar on the Middle East and the Mediterranean, organised by the NATO parliamentary assembly in Florence.

The Defence Ministers of the European Union, gathered in Brussels for the Foreign Affairs council chaired by HRVP Federica Mogherini, unanimously supported the request of aid and assistance to France, after the attacks in Paris.

More than one hundred participants from 52 non-EU partner countries and international organisations, including 13 Ambassadors, gathered today at an EEAS seminar on the perspectives for the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) following the European Council of 25 and 26 June 2015.

At their meeting in in Luxembourg on 22 June EU foreign ministers agreed to launch the EUNAVFOR Med mission to disrupt the business model of migrant smugglers in the Mediterranean.


Lors de leur réunion à Luxembourg, le 22 juin, les ministres des affaires étrangères de l'UE ont convenu de lancer la mission EUNAVFOR Med afin de démanteler le modèle économique des trafiquants en Méditerranée.


On Monday 18 May the EU took the decision to create a naval force to disrupt human smugglers in the Mediterranean which will form part of a wider approach to saving lives at sea. The joint meeting of Foreign and Defence Ministers also discussed common security and defence policy and set out ways to make it stronger and more effective in the face of security challenges to Europe such as the crises in Syria and Ukraine.


Le 18 mai, l’UE a décidé de mettre en place une opération navale visant à démanteler les réseaux de passeurs en Méditerranée, dans le cadre d’une stratégie globale destinée à sauver des vies en mer. Lors de leur réunion conjointe, les ministres des affaires étrangères et de la défense ont également discuté des moyens de rendre la politique de sécurité et de défense commune plus robuste et plus efficace pour relever les défis auxquels l’Europe est confrontée dans le domaine de la sécurité, tels que les crises en Syrie et en Ukraine.
