The Security and Defence Policy Directorate (SECDEFPOL) is responsible for coordinating and managing the EEAS overall contribution to addressing external security threats and supporting efforts to implement the EU Global Strategy. SECDEFPOL focuses on the area of security and defence in particular as regards the development of policies and tools to fulfil the EU level of ambition and the further development of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy in external relations.
This includes work on strategic issues and policy areas including cyber, cyber diplomacy toolbox, cyber defence, CBRN, hybrid, maritime security, civilian CSDP, climate and defence, counter-terrorism, disarmament, non-proliferation and arms export control and space. Furthermore, defence policy and initiatives aimed at deepening defence cooperation and developing civilian and military capabilities in order to enhance the EU’s role as security and defence provider able to address both long-standing and new security threats and contribute to global peace and security. This includes PESCO and military mobility and currently the work towards a Strategic Compass as a strategy and action plan to strengthen the EU as a global security actor. The directorate is also responsible for fostering EU common security and defence policy relations with third countries and international and regional organisations.
The Directorate consists of five divisions dealing with: Security and Defence Policy, Partnerships and Task Force NATO, Counter-Terrorism, Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Arms Export Control and Space.
