CEUMC official visit to MALI

The Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (CEUMC), General Claudio Graziano, paid a visit to Mali, from 11th to 13th November 2018, on the occasion of the EUTM-Mali Change of Command.

The Hand Hover-Take Over ceremony between Brigadier General Millan (outgoing Commander) and Brigadier General Mirow (incoming Commander) took place at the presence of Malian authorities, the German Minister of Defence Ms. Ursula von de Leyen and the France Minister of Defence Ms. Florence Parly.

Before the ceremony, General Graziano had an office call with General Millan who updated the Chairman on the current security situation within the Region and on the important results achieved by the European Trainers.

“In February 2013, at the request of the Malian Government and on the basis of UN resolutions - pointed out General Graziano during his speech - the Member States of the European Union agreed to establish the EU Training mission in Mali, being well aware that the restoration of a lasting peace in the Country is essential for long term stability in the Sahel region, also for Africa and Europe.”

“Since then - continued the EUMC Chairman - EUTM-Mali has evolved in the framework of its mandate, providing an effective answer to the needs of local authorities”.

“The European Union, together with the international community and international partners, - stressed also General Graziano- remains committed to supporting the efforts of the Sahel G5 Countries to combat terrorism and promote peace, security and development in the Region.” concluded General Graziano.

During the visit, the Chairman had also the opportunity to meet the Malian Chef d’Etat Major des Armée, Maj Gen M’Bemba Moussa Keita, share with him views on issues of mutual interest and discuss common strategic goals and actions.

General Graziano met also General Gyllensporre, Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Mali MINUSMA, and agreed with him on the importance of the global approach for the stabilization of the Country.
