Check against delivery!
Good afternoon! I have the impression that the main focus today will be on something else, but I will try to bring to the table of the European Council the work we have done in the recent months on three major files on which I know our citizens are extremely focused. And I would expect our leaders also to be focused.
First is the work we have done on migration. I will report for the third time to the European Council on the work we have done with our external partnerships, especially with our partners in Africa, and the first results we are achieving in this respect.
Second, I will report on the work we have done on defence and security, still at 28, still with unanimity. Just a few days ago here in Brussels with all the Foreign and Defence Ministers, we have decided to launch a military capability on planning and conducting of our military missions, a joint one of the European Union. And I would expect the Council today to recognise the work done and encourage us to go further, especially on the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) on defence, in the months ahead.
Third, but also very important, the Western Balkans. We have this point on the agenda. I was visiting the entire region exactly one week ago. We have discussed this with the Foreign Ministers on Monday and I would expect that the European Council will today send a very strong message of engagement, commitment, openness and credibility of the pattern that will lead the region towards the European Union integration.
So this is my expectation. I know there is also other stuff to discuss, but I think European citizens require unity and capacity to work to deliver. So I am sure today we will manage to deliver also to our citizens on these three important files and obviously we have the economic agenda. This is not my institutional file, but this is also very important.
Thank you very much!
