Statement by the Spokesperson on the Presidential election in Cote d'Ivoire

The first round of the Presidential election in Cote d'Ivoire, held on Sunday 25 October, has, like the electoral campaign, been conducted in an atmosphere of calm.The people of Cote d'Ivoire have shown their determination to leave the past behind and create a solid future for Cote d'Ivoire based on reconciliation and prosperity.The European Union is now waiting to hear from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for Cote d'Ivoire on the results of the first round. It calls on the various parties to respect the legal channels open to them should they be needed.A team of independent electoral experts has been sent by the EU to monitor and analyse the electoral process. It will remain in Cote d'Ivoire until the final results are published.
