Canadian Opposition Leader, the Hon. Rona Ambrose, was the special guest at a breakfast meeting with EU Ambassador Marie-Anne Coninsx and the Heads of Mission of EU Member States on 4 May at the EU Delegation in Ottawa.

It was an occasion for the Ambassadors and the Opposition Leader to exchange views on wide-ranging issues of mutual interest. The breakfast was part of regular working meetings of EU Heads of Missions with leading Canadian personalities.

3 de mayo: Día Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa

El 3 de mayo se celebra el Día Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa, tras ser proclamado en 1993 por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas. Según recomendación de la Conferencia General de la UNESCO, se hizo coincidir esta fecha con el aniversario de la Declaración de Windhoek, Namibia, en la cual los representantes de medios de comunicación africanos elaboraron un documento donde se recogían los principios de la libertad de prensa.

The EU welcomes the 4th Annual report of the Secretary General on the "State of democracy, human rights and the rule of law" in Europe. We find it very opportune that the Secretary General assesses the health of the five building blocks of democratic security across member states this time in the context of growing populism. The focus on independent judiciaries, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association, the functioning of democratic institutions and inclusive societies remains vital.

Barely ten days after the final curtain for the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), the European Union in Zimbabwe, in partnership with eleven of its Member States, is proud to present yet another cultural highlight: the first ever EU Film Festival in Zimbabwe, from 16 to 20 May in Harare. The Theatre in the Park at Harare Gardens sets the scene for the screening of an acclaimed assortment of films from across Europe – and everybody is on the guest list: admission to all screenings is entirely free.
