Du 12 et 18 septembre 2016, la "Semaine de la diplomatie climatique" que lance l'Union européenne lui donnera l'occasion de réitérer son engagement dans la lutte contre le changement climatique. Au moins 20 % du budget 2014-2020 de l'UE - soit 180 milliards d'euros - sont consacrés à la protection du climat qui constitue l’une des grandes priorités de l’UE. En effet, l'Europe ne ménage pas ses efforts pour réduire massivement ses émissions de gaz à effet de serre, tout en encourageant d’autres nations et régions du monde à en faire de même.
