The determination and courage of the people of the Central African Republic, who turned out to vote in the constitutional referendum held on 13 and 14 December 2015 having registered to do so in such large numbers, deserves special mention. By voting, the people of the Central African Republic have shown their determination to move on from the era of transition and pave the way for a democratic future.

The provisional agreement on victims-related issues unveiled yesterday in Havana brings Colombia one important step closer to peace.


Victims are now at the centre of a peace process. Together with truth and justice, the agreement includes the principles of reparation and non-repetition. These are essential to build a lasting peace in Colombia.

Nigeria is once again the target of violence. Over the last days, clashes in the northern city of Zaria have left more than 60 victims and many wounded. Our thoughts and condolences go to those who lost loved ones. 

We expect all local religious, political and community leaders to exercise restraint and respect human rights. We look forward to a thorough investigation by the Nigerian authorities of the incident to be urgently launched in order to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.  

Ensaf Haidar, the wife of the Saudi blogger and human rights defender Raif Badawi, has accepted the Sakharov prize for Freedom of Thought on behalf of her husband.

No passado, o setor hortícola de Cabo Verde foi uma importante fonte de rendimento e de alimentos deste arquipélago que possui tão poucos recursos. A produção de bananas, em especial, assegurava um rendimento seguro aos agricultores e às comunidades locais. Infelizmente, a maioria das plantações de bananeira foi vítima da seca, da poluição e de doenças na década de 1990. Para inverter esta trajetória, a UE financiou o desenvolvimento de sistemas de rega na ilha de Santiago para promover a recuperação do setor.

Le Nigeria est de nouveau la cible d’actes de violence. Les affrontements observés ces derniers jours dans la ville de Zaria, dans le nord du pays, ont fait plus de 60 victimes et de nombreux blessés. Nos pensées et nos condoléances vont à celles et ceux qui ont perdu des êtres chers.

Avec l’accord provisoire sur le volet «victimes» dévoilé hier à La Havane, la Colombie vient de faire un pas important vers la paix.

Les victimes sont désormais au cœur du processus de paix. Outre la vérité et la justice, l’accord comprend les principes de réparation et de non-répétition. Il s’agit là d’éléments essentiels pour bâtir une paix durable en Colombie.

The EU and Vietnam held on 15 December 2015 in Hanoi the fifth round of their annual enhanced Dialogue on Human Rights in the spirit of the EU-Vietnam Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) signed in 2012.
