I am particularly happy to be here with you, and I am glad for this opportunity to meet once again with representatives of civil society organisations. Whenever I travel abroad – both inside the European Union and beyond our borders – I always give a high priority to meetings with the civil society.
High Representative Federica Mogherini today gave strong messages of support to Non-Governmental Organisations working in the field of Human Rights, telling the 17th EU-NGO Forum on Human Rights that "civil society has a crucial role to play in our foreign policy. It is not only a key player, but also a main driver for change in all societies, in terms of democracy, good governance, resilience, cohesion, promotion of fundamental human rights."
The decision on 1 December by the Russian Ministry of Justice to list the Open Society Foundations and the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation as "undesirable organisations" along with the National Endowment for Democracy, which was listed in July, is a further restriction to the space for civil society in Russia.
La décision prise le 1er décembre par le ministère russe de la justice d'inscrire les Open Society Foundations et l'Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation sur la liste des «organisations indésirables», aux côtés de la Fondation nationale pour la démocratie, dont l'inscription sur ladite liste remonte à juin dernier, constitue une restriction de plus à l'espace laissé à la société civile en Russie.
