Diseases like Zika virus infection do not respect borders, so scientists across the globe must work together to fight them. To reinforce such collaboration, a group of international scientists and research funders held a workshop in São Paulo on 30 November – 2 December 2016. It brought together around 70 participants, both funders and researchers, from nearly 50 different institutions, from 17 countries across the globe, as well as from the European Commission, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The workshop took place in the context of the Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GloPID-R), a global network of research funders who work to fight outbreaks of disease wherever they appear.
