The eighth session of the European Union-Indonesia Human Rights Dialogue took place on 8th November 2019 in Brussels. Both delegations raised and discussed a wide range of topics of mutual interest and concern in an open and constructive manner.

In light of the ongoing political, economic, social and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela with persistent actions undermining democracy, the rule of law and the respect for human rights, the Council today extended the restrictive measures against Venezuela for one year, until 14 November 2020. The measures include an embargo on arms and on equipment for internal repression as well as a travel ban and an asset freeze on 25 listed individuals in official positions who are responsible for human rights violations and/or for undermining democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela.

ILO is launching this call for applications of legal experts to participate in the drafting of the legal acts transposing a number of EU directives on OSH and labour relations into national legislation.

We will have two days of Council, today with the Foreign Ministers, tomorrow with the Defence Ministers, with a full agenda as usual.

But let me start with two issues that are not on today’s or tomorrow’s agenda. First, we followed yesterday with great concern and we are feeling very close to the Italian authorities and military over the attack in Iraq. We are following developments very closely there.

The decision of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to ease the conditions of detention of Cambodian opposition leader Kem Sokha is a first step in the right direction. However, Kem Sokha remains under court supervision, his case is not closed and he is banned from engaging in any political activities.

The EUDEL organized a Forum Talk focusing on the theme of "Strengthening Democracy in the 21st Century".
