9 May Europe Day celebrated for the first time in St. Lucia

The European Union celebrated Europe Day on 9 May for the first time in St. Lucia at the site of the New National Hospital

Mass to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the accreditation of the Delegation to the Holy See, that occurred on the same occasion of Europe Day in 2006.

On 9 May the European Union Delegation in Rome hosted the Europe Day reception to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the signing of the Schuman Declaration.

Discours du Chef de Délégation

The European Union's significant and ever-deepening innovation links with Australia will be the central theme of this year's Europe Day celebrations in Canberra. Europe Day celebrates the declaration by the then French foreign minister, Robert Schuman, that called on 9 of May 1950 for a "creative" solution to end conflict on the European Continent. His innovative proposal to merge France and Germany's coal and steel industries brought peace and has led ultimately to the creation of the European Union. The desire to innovate and help frame global solutions has been developed by the EU over the years in areas such as development, human rights, rule of law, trade and climate action.

On Monday, 9 May, the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini will participate at the meeting of Friends of Syria on ministerial level in Paris, also in presence of the Syrian opposition representative, Riyad Hijab.

The meeting will aim at supporting the Geneva process and preparing for the next round of intra-Syrian talks in order for parties in conflict to reach an agreement for a political transition in Syria.

Despite the many calls made by the European Union, another execution has been carried out in Belarus. The case of Syarhey Iwanow, who had been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Belarus in March 2015, is particularly disturbing in light of the fact that his complaint was pending with the UN Human Rights Committee.

The death sentence against Sergei Khmelevsky, which was upheld by the Belarus Supreme Court on 6 May, has also been confirmed.
