Today, as we celebrate the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, our thoughts go to all those around the world who have been and continue to be exposed to this horrible practice.

The EU will never give up its staunch commitment to the prevention and eradication of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, which are unequivocally prohibited under international law.

The chain of attacks in France, Tunisia and Kuwait is a stark reminder that no country and no region can ignore the challenge posed by terrorists.

They aim at destabilising our societies by spreading fear, suspicion, prejudice. Both Europe and the Arab world are targeted. Together we cry for our victims – and together we will stand against violence and sectarianism.

The on-going crisis in Burundi and its regional impact; the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda; the state of play of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the DRC and the region; and the fight against the illegal exploitation and trade of natural resources in the Great Lakes Region were amongst the items on the agenda of the meeting of the International Contact Group (ICG) for the Great Lakes Region that took place in Brussels on 18 June.
