The release of 69 student protesters, who were detained for more than a year, sends a strong signal of commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms by the new Myanmar government. The European Union has followed these cases closely and regularly observed court hearings as part of our human rights engagement. We look forward to the release of all remaining political prisoners and their full rehabilitation.
General Wayan Midhio, Excellencies, Dear Students of the Defence University, dear friends,
It is a pleasure to be here, in this centre representing such an excellence for peacekeeping and counterterrorism, in Asia and worldwide. I look forward to touring the different parts of this camp – but the very existence of this Peace and Security Centre is so telling about Indonesia, how you see the world and your place in global politics.
Federica Mogherini is in Indonesia for two days of talks focusing on EU-Indonesia relations and EU-ASEAN ties.
Closer economic cooperation, countering terrorism and climate change are on the agenda. On her first day in Jakarta, the High Representative met with President Joko Widodo, inviting him to be the first Indonesian president to visit the EU institutions in Brussels. She then co-chaired the first-ever Indonesia-EU Strategic Dialogue, together with Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.
