The European Union and six countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on 10 June signed an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), the first of its kind. The EPA with Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland - i.e. the so-called "SADC EPA group" is a development-oriented free trade agreement.

The European Union has supported the Global Fund since its inception in 2002.

The EU's Operation Sophia, launched one year ago to fight traffickers and smugglers' networks, has been at the forefront of Europe's response to the refugee and migrant crisis in the Mediterranean.


Today's unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2292 will now enable Operation Sophia also to play an important role in implementing the UN arms embargo on Libya.
