The European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica,  attends the 8th Summit of African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Heads of State and Government in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from 30 May to 1 June 2016.

The sentence against Ali Salman, Secretary-General of Al Wefaq political society, was increased from 4 to 9 years imprisonment by a Bahraini Court of Appeal on 30 May 2016. Contrary to the first instance ruling, the Court of Appeal retained the charge of "seeking to overthrow by force the monarchy and change the political system”.


La peine prononcée à l'encontre d'Ali Salman, secrétaire général du parti Al-Wefaq, est passée de 4 à 9 années d'emprisonnement à la suite de la décision de la Cour d'appel de Bahreïn du 30 mai 2016. Contrairement à la décision rendue en première instance, la Cour d'appel a retenu l'accusation de «tentative de renversement par la force de la monarchie et de réforme du système politique».

The recent amendments to Nauru's Criminal code abolishing the death penalty and decriminalising homosexuality send a strong signal to other countries in the Pacific region that are yet to do so.

In abolishing the death penalty, Nauru has demonstrated its belief, shared by the European Union as well as many other countries worldwide, in the inherent dignity of all human beings and the inviolability of the human person. The death penalty cannot be justified under any circumstances.
