A three-day Regional Workshop on Infrastructures for Peace in West Africa was held in Accra. The workshop which was from 1 - 3 June 2016 was organised under the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) Project on Building National Capacities for Conflict Prevention.

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) for Tanzania’s 2015 General Elections today submitted to Tanzanian partners its final report containing proposals for reforms to improve the electoral process and enhance voter confidence in future elections.

 

The European Commission adopted a proposal for a Council Decision this week (31 May 2016) on the incorporation of the Regulations on the European Supervisory Authorities and some of the related Regulations and Directives into the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA). This is an important step towards the extension of the European System of Financial Supervision (ESFS) to the EEA EFTA countries: Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

Members of the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT) have been sentenced by the Supreme Court of Tajikistan: deputy leaders Saidumar Hussaini and Mahmadali Hait were sentenced to life imprisonment, while long prison sentences were given to eleven other members of the party.

G7 2016 Ise-Shima, Japan Summit

On 26-27 May, the EU attended the G7 Summit hosted by Japan. The summit focused on the global economy, foreign policy and the migration and refugee crisis. In the margins of the summit the EU, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement on the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement known as the Free Trade Agreement.

The Somali education authorities with financial support from the European Union have this week administered the end of secondary school examinations to 33,000 students marking unprecedented subscription to standardized and centralized country-wide examinations. An additional 26,000 pupils also sat for the end of primary school examinations same week. This high turn up for a government sanctioned examinations by Somali pupils and students signals a positive step towards restoration of a government controlled and regulated education services.
