The European Union [EU] today signed two grant contracts that will see a total of five Civil Society Organisations [CSOs] benefitting from grant funding from the thematic line Civil Society Organisations and Local Authorities (CSO LA) programme. Introduced in 2007 the CSO LA is a development policy instrument which builds on important programmes and policies such as the “The Structured Dialogue” process, the Agenda for Change and the Busan Partnership for development cooperation.

Officials from the EU and Indonesia met in Bali, Indonesia, from 24 to 27 January to hold the 2nd round of negotiations for an EU-Indonesia Free Trade Agreement. Discussions built on the 1st round of negotiations, which took place in Brussels from 20 to 21 September 2016. The EU negotiating team was led by Ms Helena König, Director for Asia and Latin America, while the Indonesian team was led by Pak Iman Pambagyo, Director General for International Trade Negotiations at the Indonesian Ministry of Trade.
The verdict of the Leninsky Court in Kirov today against Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny on charges of embezzlement attempts to silence yet another independent political voice in the Russian Federation.
Last year, the European Court of Human Rights had ruled that Mr Navalny had been denied the right to a fair trial in his prosecution in 2013 for the same charges.
