In response to an invitation by the Nigerian authorities, the European Union has deployed an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to observe the Presidential, Parliamentary and then Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections in Nigeria. These are scheduled on 14 and 28 February respectively.

The transfer of Dominic Ongwen, an alleged brigade commander of the Lord's Resistance Army, to The Hague for trial is a significant achievement for international justice. Mr Ongwen has been transferred pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes. 

The EU congratulates all those who made this transfer possible. Their efforts in this respect are helping bring justice for the thousands of victims of the LRA, and among them many children.

Le transfèrement de M. Ongwen fait suite au mandat d'arrêt que la Cour pénale internationale a délivré à son encontre pour crimes contre l'humanité et crimes de guerre.

Political tension surrounding the review of the draft electoral law in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and violent demonstrations in Kinshasa and other cities which have claimed many victims are threatening the stability of the country.

All political forces must seek a consensus which will ease the situation and enable a return to calm.
